MARKETING CONSULTING

An introduction: I’ve been freelancing in some capacity since high school, and regularly since 2015. Sometimes my work is strictly graphic design, sometimes it’s strategic consulting. Most of the time, it’s somewhere in-between. Over the past few years, I’ve become a regular part of teams’ fractional workforce approach. What that means: I essentially serve as organizations’ makeshift VP of Marketing for months at a time—I report to the CEO, handle all internal and external mar/comm (marketing and communications) needs, and both work reactively to respond to requests and proactively to suggest strategies.

What I do: I’ve pretty much done it all when it comes to mar/comm—I’ve edited videos, ghostwritten thought leadership, managed newsletters, created viral social media campaigns, designed bus ads, done print layout on books, built websites for national multi-millionaire orgs as well as for mom & pop shops, managed crowdfunding campaigns, organized conferences, made countless decks, drove recruitment campaigns, researched/developed/ordered swag, led large-scale brand redesigns, and more. My design portfolio showcases some of my work, but there are many work projects not highlighted there (I prioritize client work over updating my portfolio). In the meantime, you can explore examples of popular project bookings below.

Who I work with: I am proud to have many repeat clients; I love building longterm relationships with partners. I have worked with 20+ organizations in all things marketing and communication, with a focus on nonprofits and BIPOC- and/or women-founded organizations. The majority of my work is done remotely with clients and partners around the country. I offer a discount for nonprofits and schools.

When I’ve done it: I’ve been freelancing in earnest for over 10 years. In terms of full-time work, I started my post-college career with as a Global Communications Associate at Y&R Advertising in New York City. Then, as part of my fellowship with Venture for America, I worked in Rhode Island as a Marketing Associate at the National Academy for the Advancement of Teacher Education (NAATE). I was the first marketing hire at Camelback Ventures in New Orleans where I served as the Creative Director (and later promoted to Director of Creative & Marketing) for 2.5 years. I went full-time freelance in January 2019 through August 2020, and from 2020-2023, I pursued and earned an MFA in Creative Writing. Since Fall 2020, I’ve been consulting part-time while I also work on my art.

Who I am: You can check out my bio and LinkedIn to learn more about me.

Please feel free to contact me for any information on rates, requests for specific portfolio types, or testimonials. Thanks for being interested in my work!

POPULAR PROJECT BOOKINGS

brand (re)design & brand suite

I take branding very seriously. I have created my own methodology based on years of research, passion, and trial and error to help hone in on an organization’s branding nature. (I have both an extensive version and a lightweight/low-cost option.) Organizations come away with a brand book or brand guidelines including color, font, and voice recommendations; and a new logo suite and all necessary files. People often add-on orders such as business cards, stationery designs, digital assets (newsletter designs, powerpoint and google doc templates, etc) and swag designs (such as stickers, posters, t-shirts, pens, mugs, etc — I give specific product recommendations as well).

website

I work with many organizations on their websites, either editing their existing version and making it into its best self, or completely relaunching. I help organizations with everything from analyzing written voice, menu structure and logic, content necessary, competitor websites, graphic designs, and the creation and design. I can also do domain transfers, though it’s not my comfort area. I am a solid above-beginner front-end coder in CSS and HTML. For the past five years, I’ve specialized in Squarespace, though I always work with client preferences and have done work in Wordpress, Wix, and Weebly, amongst others. My goal is to always make websites that the clients can use and edit themselves later.

STRATEGY

MARKETING & STRATEGIC

I partner with organizations to define their marketing strategy (with a focus on digital communications, community building, brand implementation). In particular, I have worked with many social entrepreneurs during Years 0 - 3 in building out their organizational and marketing strategy. I also have supported orgs prior on internal work flow and culture, personal brand research and identity, thought leadership, teaching workshops, video and press opportunities, UX and app design, and event planning.

My digital communications specialities include:

  • Strategy, building out quarterly plans to meet annual goals

  • Content marketing strategy

  • Newsletters (design and content) and strategic communications (notable releases)

  • Recruitment outreach

  • Event branding, invitations, ticket sales, and follow-through

  • Developing strategic partners and retaining contact

  • Social media marketing strategies*

*I no longer operate social media for organizations as part of my client services, though I can help create designs, write captions, and build strategies.

I '‘cut my teeth” doing this work as being the first mar/comm hire at Camelback Ventures as the Creative Director, later being promoted to Director of Creative & Marketing. I worked for Camelback for 2.5 years; when I went full-time freelancing in January 2019, Camelback was my first client. As of Spring 2024, Camelback still uses the website, brand, and many communications strategies that I created. Explore here:

graphic & PRINT design

Including but not limited to: infographics, demonstrative graphics, postcards, 50-page strategic plans, one-pagers, two-sided one-pagers (seriously, so many one-pagers…), cookbooks, full book layout, book covers, exciting Powerpoint/Google Slides decks, etc.

WORKSHOPS

I occasionally teach online virtual workshops. In 2016-2017, I taught a Marketing & Stakeholder Management Workshop to cohorts of Camelback Fellows. In 2019 - 2022, I taught a Marketing & Communications 101 workshop for the fellowship cohorts of Moonshot edVentures for 3 years which demystifies the mar/comm world, shares best practices for social impact orgs and early stage ventures, and guides students through tangible, practical worksheets for immediate and future roadmapping on websites, swag, branding, and more. I have also taught a How to: Strategic Marketing Plan class, have done 30-minute 1:1 Rapid-Fire Communications Hot Fix sessions, and been available on various Consultant Expert Benches for entrepreneurs who can schedule time with me. I also taught writing for two years at the University of Pittsburgh.

TESTIMONY:

I appreciated you candor and full transparency regarding the reality and pitfalls of branding. It was both funny and insightful. I feel more confident going forward in creating a brand for myself but also not to be afraid to reach out for help if I don’t understand or I am not capable of completing all the tasks or processes to maintain it. Appreciate the expertise and presentation beyond words. Thank you!

writing & editorial

I end up doing some form of copy-writing and copy-editing with almost all of my freelance clients and full-time jobs. I’m usually not hired just to write, but rather, this is something I just do on top of whatever else I’m working on. I have done my own thought leadership, ghost written for others, and provide editing services on both internal and external communications (with a special focus on blog writing). I also write nonfiction, fiction, and poetry.

Here’s a few samples of some “business” writing:

Video Editing

& STILL PHOTOGRAPHY

There was a time I used to do a ton of pre-production, video and sound production, and post-production. These days I mostly focus on my favorite part: video editing. I have experience with Avid Media Composer and Final Cut Pro. I also provide consulting on other people’s video cuts (i.e., you already have a videographer but want me to give 10 minutes of hot takes). My photography is more of a hobby, but I do still digital photography in landscape and culinary, as well as casual headshots for friends and family.

PAST PROJECT SAMPLE:

In Fall 2023, I edited the following video for Moonshot:

In Fall 2017, I led Camelback’s first major investment into video by leading the production of this piece including managing contractors, scheduling shoot days, overseeing edits, and directing the overall vision.
